Photo: Kakolat Falls cascading down layered rock near Nawada, Bihar

Quick Information
Hidden in the Kaimur range about 33 kilometres south of Nawada town, Kakolat Falls is one of Bihar’s most spectacular natural attractions. The waterfall tumbles roughly 160 feet down a layered rock face into a wide, swimmable pool at the base — a sight that draws thousands of visitors during the monsoon months and increasingly through the cooler season as well. Local legend ties the falls to a cursed serpent king who was freed by a sage’s touch, and the area still holds spiritual significance for nearby communities.
The 2024 redevelopment
If you last visited Kakolat before 2024, you will notice dramatic changes. The Bihar government completed a significant redevelopment project that transformed the site from a largely unmanaged natural area into a structured tourist destination. The upgrades include:
- Paved walking paths from the parking area to the base of the falls
- Tiered bathing pools with stone walls separating shallow and deeper areas
- Changing rooms and washrooms near the main pool
- Small vendor stalls along the approach selling snacks, chai, and basic supplies
- Entry via a nominal fee (currently ₹20 per person, ₹50 for vehicles) which goes toward maintenance
The redevelopment has made Kakolat far more accessible. Families with children will find the new pools much safer than the old, unmarked rock pools. That said, the area beyond the maintained pools remains wild — rocks are slippery and the current can be strong after heavy rain.
